Perinatal/Postpartum Substance Use
BCAR members are examining the prevalence, patterns, and correlates of the most used drugs (nicotine, alcohol, cannabis) during and after pregnancy in vulnerable pregnant and birthing people to identify targets and timing for intervention and to reduce health inequities in the population.
Neuroscience
BCAR faculty are investigating the neurobiological mechanisms underlying vulnerability to substance use disorders and of relapse to substance use in animal models and how these circuits could be targeted to improve treatment outcomes.
Genetics
BCAR faculty are studying gene expression in both human and animal samples to uncover expression patterns that are associated with risk for developing alcohol use disorders (AUD) and related substance use disorders, potentially offering implications for prevention of these disorders and for medication development.
Technology Use in Addiction Recovery
BCAR faculty investigate the ways that networked technology (e.g., social media, mobile apps, websites) are utilized in overcoming addiction and sustaining recovery. This includes observing trends in technology use and developing novel digital interventions.
Tobacco Prevention and Control
BCAR members are investigating new and emerging nicotine and tobacco products that are popular with youth via mixed methods (surveys, focus groups, social media surveillance) and developing and testing youth-oriented prevention programs.
